FAQ

Common Questions

Answers to the questions most people have before booking their first appointment.
Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

No. You can contact us directly to book an appointment without a referral from a GP or other healthcare provider. If you are using private health insurance, check with your insurer whether they require a referral before they will reimburse the cost.

Is the cost covered by Swedish healthcare or insurance?

We are a private practice and do not operate within the Swedish public healthcare system (landstinget), so the standard patient fee (högkostnadsskydd) does not apply. Many private health insurance policies cover psychological treatment — contact your insurer to confirm what is included in your policy and whether pre-approval is required.

Some employers also offer access to psychological support through occupational health benefits. It is worth checking your employment contract or HR department.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies considerably depending on the issue and the individual. Some people achieve their goals in six to eight sessions; others benefit from longer-term work. We discuss this openly from the start and review progress regularly so you are never in treatment longer than is useful.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a therapist?

In Sweden, the title psychologist (psykolog) is a protected professional title regulated by the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen). It requires a five-year university programme and a supervised internship. The title therapist or psykoterapeut is also a protected title but follows a different training route.

Anyone can legally call themselves a counsellor or coach. If professional regulation matters to you, ask to see the practitioner's licence number, which can be verified on the Socialstyrelsen website.

Are sessions confidential?

Yes. Psychologists in Sweden are bound by professional secrecy under the Patient Data Act (patientdatalagen) and the Health and Medical Services Act. Information you share is not passed on to your employer, GP, or anyone else without your written consent, with very limited exceptions defined by law (such as serious risk of harm to yourself or others).

Can I have sessions online or by phone?

Yes. We offer video sessions via a secure, GDPR-compliant platform. Many clients find online sessions just as effective as in-person ones, and they remove the need to travel. The first session is often easier to assess in person, but this is not a requirement.

What happens if I need to cancel an appointment?

We ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Appointments cancelled with less notice than this are charged in full, as the time cannot typically be offered to another client at short notice. You will receive a reminder before your appointment to help avoid missed bookings.
